Italian American Heritage Month is celebrated in October to align with Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday of the month. Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer whose voyages were pivotal in the history of Americas. Historically, Italian Americans used this day as a way to honor their heritage and contributions in the USA, making October a fitting time for the broader celebration of Italian American culture.
Shaping America: Notable Italian-American Figures
Italian Americans have made remarkable contributions to American arts, humanities, and sciences. Notable figures include Frank Sinatra, the son of Italian immigrants who shaped American entertainment, Antonin Scalia, the first Italian American appointed to the United States Supreme Court, and Salvador Luria, Italian-born microbiologist and geneticist who immigrated to the USA and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on genetic mechanisms in viruses.
