Mini Hero
China, 2022
Directed by: Chen Xiong

A light-hearted adventure with a unique twist on the perspective trope.
A tour guide, Gu Jia, accidentally activates a shrinking collider while leading a group through the former residence of a legendary scientist. This mishap transforms him into a 1-centimeter-tall person, plunging him into a miniature world filled with everyday objects that now pose monumental challenges. As Gu Jia navigates this new reality, he encounters a series of humorous situations, all while trying to find a way to return to his original size.
The narrative cleverly explores the concept of scale, where mundane objects like furniture become obstacles. While the film leans heavily into visual effects to depict the miniature world, it maintains a light-hearted tone that keeps the audience entertained. It’s a whimsical adventure that reminds us of the wonders and challenges of the world from a different perspective.
Nonna ci produce un Film
Italy, 2023
Directed by: Walter Garibaldi

A stubborn widow is on a mission to make a documentary about her late husband, who she believes was a misunderstood genius. Determined, she assembles a quirky group of helpers along the way. This task turns into a whirlwind of misunderstandings and comical situations, revealing more about family, love, and the importance of following your dreams–a bit banal, but still nice to enjoy once in a while.
Nonna is absolutely perfect in her role. She’s grumpy, but there’s this tenderness in her character that makes her so lovable. The generational clashes between Nonna and the younger characters add an extra layer of depth.
It’s also in an independent cinema hit: Nonna ci Produce un Film won the Sergio Pastore Independent Cinema First Feature Film Award and the Gioca Italia Best Director Award at the 44th edition, making Garibaldi’s—yes, a relative to the famous General Giuseppe Garibaldi—feature debut a huge success.
House of No Man
Vietnam, 2023
Directed by: Tran Thanh

Love does not conquer everything. Do you agree?
Nhi struggles to balance her dreams with the harsh realities of family life. She lives in a multi-generational household led by her stern and conservative mother, Nu. Nhi’s ambition to become a designer is put on hold as she works tirelessly at the family’s crab restaurant. Her brother-in-law, played by director Tran Thanh, is the only man in the household, but hardly the leader.
As if her personal battles weren’t enough, Nhi meets John, a young, wealthy man who sweeps her off her feet. However, love doesn’t come easily. Nhi’s mother immediately disapproves of John, and his family rejects Nhi for her social class. With family expectations pulling them in different directions, Nhi and John find themselves at a crossroads.
Though the story itself might feel a little predictable—lovers from different social classes struggling to gain acceptance—the film doesn’t shy away from emotional extremes. The drama is palpable. This family movie has a strong, distinctly Vietnamese flair and leans into melodramatic tropes, but it doesn’t detract from its earnestness.
Clickbait
Pakistan, 2020
Directed by: Sami RehmanSami

Clickbait brings the fierce world of YouTube content creation to life in a high-stakes, competitive drama about two rival vloggers, Sara and Asad, who will stop at nothing to outdo each other. Both influencers have been chasing the top spot since the very beginning, and with every new video, they’re both trending and sparking heated feuds. The rivalry escalates when they both plan their first international vlogs. Of course, they choose the same country and city, setting the stage for an all-out battle.
Sara and Asad’s constant back-and-forth, trying to one-up each other, feels both exaggerated and relatable—after all, isn’t the whole point of social media to be the best at everything?
The film has its share of chaotic moments, but it’s this energy that makes Clickbait such an enjoyable watch. With a small crew working under tight deadlines and a challenging filming schedule, including shooting in Thailand during the height of the pandemic, the movie still manages to give the film a nice balance of light-hearted moments and some sweet, reflective scenes.
Music on Hold
Argentina, 2006
Directed by: Hernán Goldfrid

Music on Hold (original title: Musica en Espera) is a heartwarming and quirky Argentine rom-com about a man, Ezequiel, who is stuck in a creative rut. As a film composer with a growing pile of overdue bills, he’s struggling to get through his day, especially after a failed attempt to beg his bank for more time to pay his mortgage. But things take a turn when, while on hold with a bank assistant manager named Paula (Natalia Oreiro!), Ezequiel hears the perfect melody for a film scene. The only problem? He can’t remember it well enough to recreate it.
Music on Hold has that delightful rom-com charm that feels like an old friend: predictable but comforting, with just enough quirky surprises to keep you hooked. The chemistry between Ezequiel and Paula feels natural. This family comedy doesn’t manipulate your emotions with cheap shots. Instead, it’s grounded in the characters’ vulnerability and the sweet, awkward way they navigate their feelings.
