FilmFestivalDatabase notes that as of 2020, there are 1,023 U.S. festivals listed with 6 million members or followers of art house theaters and 20 million social media followers of U.S. film festivals.
Impressive, right? With this treasure of an audience under their belt, indie film festivals tend to be more accessible to new filmmakers, with a greater emphasis on artistic and community-driven programming rather than commercial appeal.
Let’s see what the current Film Festival Circuit is, and what indie filmmakers should prioritize in their festival run.
What Is Film Festival Circuit?
The film festival circuit refers to the global network of festivals where filmmakers present their work to audiences, critics, and industry professionals. These range from prestigious events like Cannes, Sundance, and the Toronto International Film Festival to specialized gatherings such as the Slamdance Film Festival and DOC NYC, which focus on independent and documentary films.
While mainstream festivals catapult careers through high-profile premieres and distribution deals, such as Sundance launching Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, the indie circuit is rooted in creative freedom and grassroots support and offers filmmakers opportunities to cultivate their audience and craft over time rather than striving for immediate commercial success.
